While I never really get homesick when I travel, it’s always nice to see “Hawai‘i” when away from home and how it fits into wherever I am. It was wonderful to discover this O’Keeffe painting of hibiscus and plumeria in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. I know about the artist’s trip to Hawai‘i, and her paintings of waterfalls, mountains, and flora. I did not know that she was supposed to create advertisement paintings for Dole Pineapple Company while in the islands, but never painted a pineapple while in Hawai‘i.
