I appreciate how the Oxfram Guides are not too long or overly technical. They provide many practical ideas and activities for implementation. Having the reassurance to include controversial issues in the curriculum, also gives me the courage to not avoid it. In order to deal with challenging situations, one must learn to deal with them. Sheltering my students from global issues is a disservice to their education, and only perpetuating ignorance, possibly denial. Oxfam states that the global citizenship approach needs to be embedded into the subject curriculum, and that controversial topics be dealt with consistently, in a supportive atmosphere. Finding ways to integrate everything our students need to learn is a challenge, but I also think it can be stimulating for the teacher, keeping their practice relevant and fresh.
